Sheriff’s Whopper Meltdown: Craig Owens in Fast Food Power Play
It’s one thing to hear about the abuse of power by politicians, but it’s a whole different story when it’s caught on camera—and that’s exactly what we have here with Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens. You can’t make this stuff up: a sheriff—an elected official, mind you—dispatching his own deputies to handle a personal gripe over a fast-food order? This goes beyond petty. It’s a blatant misuse of power, and every taxpayer in Cobb County should be furious. Let’s break this down.
Sheriff Owens wasn’t satisfied with a Whopper order from Burger King. They didn’t get it right, and instead of, like the rest of us, maybe walking back in or shrugging it off, he called in the cavalry. Three—yes, three—deputies were sent to that Burger King, not to protect the public, but to soothe the sheriff’s bruised ego. Owens demanded the names of the restaurant’s owner and manager, supposedly to file a “complaint.” Really? A complaint requires three law enforcement officers?
Irate sheriff calls for backup after Burger King messes up his order, and squad cars show up with sirens blaring
He wanted it his way. A Georgia sheriff was so ticked off when Burger King botched his order that he called for backup.
Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens’ Whopper-size beef with the fast food eatery was caught on newly released bodycam footage — which shows the top cop sending his deputies to the restaurant after the staff allegedly got his order wrong, according to a report by WSB-TV News.
Three deputies were dispatched to the scene — with lights flashing and sirens blaring. “Hey, do me a favor,” Owens tells a deputy while sitting in his truck in the parking lot of a local fast food outlet. “I need to get, all I need is the owner name of whoever owns this damn facility, or manager. “I wanted [to get his female passenger] a Whopper, no mayo, cut in half, right?” he said. “I don’t need no damn money back no more. I just need to find out who owns this place so I can do an official complaint.”
Fraternal Order of Police endorses David Cavender
The largest Fraternal Order of Police lodge in Georgia, Cobb’s own Kermit Sanders Lodge #13, has endorsed David Cavender, the Republican challenging Democratic incumbent Craig Owens in the race for Cobb County sheriff this November.
Cavender, a sergeant in both the Cobb Police Department and the Army Reserves, got the nod from the lodge, composed of more than 1,300 members from law enforcement organizations in Cobb, Douglas and Paulding counties.
Jimmy Stephens, a retired lieutenant with the Cobb Police Department and the lodge’s treasurer, said the turnout for the endorsement vote would not be released until after the lodge’s July 10 meeting, when it will detail the results of the lodge’s members. However, he said the Cobb sheriff endorsement process was “extremely successful,” and turnout was the highest for an endorsement that he’s seen from the lodge’s membership…

Cobb Sheriff's Race Heats Up
Among the big ticket offices up for election this year is that of Cobb County sheriff. Five candidates are in the race.In 2020, Democratic challenger Craig Owens ousted longtime Republican Sheriff Neil Warren, bringing GOP control of that position to an end.
Now that’s wrapping up his first term, Owens finds himself facing Gregory Gilstrap in May’s Democratic primary. Owens faced Gilstrap four years ago and bested him then. If he does so this year, he will square off against the winner of the three GOP candidates vying in the Republican primary: David Cavender, Antaney Hogan and Ricci Mason.
In today’s column, Around Town takes a look at Cavender, 47, who is a sergeant in both the Army Reserves and the Cobb Police Department. Born in Atlanta, Cavender grew up in ….
